What's New?

By Kathy Jackson

Created a whole new section called Psychology and Physiology. Posted two new articles: Awareness is Important and Awareness is Impossible.

Posted an article titled Castle Doctrine and Stand Your Ground Laws which was adapted from a forum post written by a retired lawyer, Frank Ettin. As you may surmise, it was written in response to the widespread misinformation and hype surrounding the Zimmerman/Martin shooting that happened in Sanford, Florida in spring 2012. Although that shooting happened in Florida, under laws that are specific to that state, Stand Your Ground and Castle Doctrine laws are common everywhere. That means that the legal basics of how Stand Your Ground and Castle Doctrine laws work should be clearly understood by anyone who carries a firearm for self-defense. That's why I asked for, and received, Frank Ettin's permission to post his work here on Cornered Cat.

Just posted a short but important article in the Ammunition section. It's titled, Are Hollowpoint Bullets More Dangerous? If you've ever wondered why so many firearms experts recommend "dangerous" hollowpoint ammunition for self-defense, you'll be interested in this article.

A Facebook friend asked me if I would be willing to post one of the chapters from Cornered Cat the book on the website. It was, she explained, an excellent explanation of mindset that she'd like to share with her non-shooting friends, but these people would be unlikely to read a book about concealed carry. Would I be willing to put it on the website for them? Absolutely! And here it is: Dying of Embarrassment. If you never thought a little embarrassment could literally kill you ... think again.

There are also a few undocumented updates that somehow didn't make it to the What's New page last time around: Are You Paranoid? (must reading for those who aren't sure!) and Pistol Shooting for Ladies (a charmingly outdated look at the topic from the early 1900's).

And a reminder: this website is really a labor of love, and I really appreciate it when people help me keep it error-free. If you find a broken link, outdated data, wrong information, or anything else that should be corrected, I would take it as a kindness if you would let me know. You can reach me via email at pax at Cornered Cat dot com.

This week, I've added a new article about women and firearms training. It's titled, "Motivating Female Students to Excel." Guess I should admit right now that I'm not terribly thrilled with the title and will probably change it as soon as something more catchy occurs to me. Meanwhile, you can find the new work at http://corneredcat.com/You_Dont_Have_to_Learn. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for you.

I've been working hard to reach out to people on Facebook and Twitter. In fact, if you're already following Cornered Cat in either place, you received a sneak preview of the new article earlier this week. I would love to see more people join us. My Twitter feed is #Cornered_Cat, and you can find the Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Cornered-Cat/132846980141734. It would be great to see you there.

Just a quick note: several helpful people have written to me over the past couple of weeks and let me know when they found broken links on the website. I'm very, very grateful to these folks! If you find a broken link, incorrect information, or anything else that should be corrected, I would take it as a kindness if you would let me know. You can reach me via email at pax at Cornered Cat dot com.

Wow! So much going on around here that it's hard to bring it all into focus, but … first things first: The articles. Today I put up two new articles, both on the subject of purses. The first article talks about features to look for in concealed carry purses, and explains why those features are important. You'll also find links to specific products and companies for each feature, which I thought might be an important touch (something I couldn't provide in book form, since books hang around for many years but products tend to come and go). Find the new article at Concealed Carry Purses.

The second new article I put up today provides links to five different YouTube videos. Please be aware that some of these stories are very upsetting and even graphic in spots, so don't watch them at work or with the kids around. But they provide valuable information and some really important food for thought, so be sure not to miss them. You can find this one at Purse Snatching Is Violent.

Other new stuff: check out the Cornered Cat Training calendar. I'm looking forward to teaching a class in Memphis the weekend of February 18-19, 2012. The hosts for the class are Tom and Lynn Givens at Rangemaster. Lynn and several other female staff at Rangemaster will be joining us as assistants during the class. I'm tremendously excited about the opportunity to teach and learn with this group. Call Rangemaster at (901)370-5600 if you'd like to be a part of it.

Also, I just heard from the folks organizing the SAF Gun Rights Policy Conference in Chicago a few weeks from now. I'm going to be on a panel discussion! Very excited and a little nervous. So if you attend, I'd sure appreciate the support if you'd stop by and say hello while you're there. For those interested in learning more about supporting and expanding the human right to self defense, GRPC is the place to be September 23-25.

A girl has to change her look from time to time, or she'll end up as frumpy and out of style as one of the aunts in a Far Side cartoon. But it's not just the lipstick that has changed. The girl is getting a whole new career. It's time to take Cornered Cat to the next level. Here's what I've implemented so far.

The Cat's Meow - the Cornered Cat Newsletter. To keep in better touch and provide more content for the Cornered Cat Community, I'm starting a newsletter that will be filled with training tips, news and gossip about the concealed carry world, holster and gear reviews, questions from readers, and all sorts of other good stuff. My plan is to send this thing out once a week, or at least as often as I have both time and material. I won't waste your time or mine when I have little to say, and I won't share your email address with anyone else.

Cornered Cat Training Company (CCTC). For nearly a decade, I've been teaching at the Firearms Academy of Seattle. I'll keep doing that, but it's also time to strike out on my own and take the show on the road. I'll be available for classes, seminars, and special events all over the country!

Instructor Outreach. I'm also working on some fantastic helps for other instructors right here on the Cornered Cat website; that's still in the early planning stages but I wanted to give you the heads up now so you'd be sure to spread the word.

Gunhilda is one of my favorite creations, and she's been sitting in the background much too long. Though originally invented to provide some humor and snark, Gunhilda also loves to answer tricky questions that may otherwise never get asked. Since she's promised to become more helpful, I've given her her own corner of the web.

Cornered Cat Community memberships. I already get plenty of letters from people who consider themselves part of the Cornered Cat family. So now it is time to make it official with a network of people who have grown to believe their own lives are worth defending and who want to support other women making the same life-changing decisions. The Cornered Cat Community helps support the cost of keeping this site available as a resource for new shooters. Please follow the link to see how you can become a part of this effort.

I'm very excited about the new look of Cornered Cat, and even more excited to see how many more people I'll be able to reach with these new tools. Thanks for letting me share my world with you.
