You've always wondered ...

What Gun is Best for a Man?

(explanation)

By Kathy Jackson

Dear Readers,

Since you've found this page, you probably got here by following the footnote link in the article  titled "What Gun For a Man?"

It is possible that you're a bit offended, or maybe just curious. Most people understand the use of sarcasm, irony, and parody, but not everyone does, and the article you (presumably) just read was very heavy on the sarcasm. That is why I am adding this explanatory page.

Let us get the obvious questions out of the way first:

Do I hate men? Do I think men are stupid, clumsy, and a bit oafish? Do I really believe that a 12-gauge pump shotgun is really the best gun for all men?

No. No. And no.

The truth is that I believe absolutely, exactly NOTHING of what I wrote in that article (and that is why you found the footnote which led you here to this page). People -- both men and women -- are individuals, and deserve to be treated like individuals. Being treated otherwise is really annoying, and usually sounds pretty stupid to anyone with half a brain. And that is the entire point of that very sarcastic article.

Here is how that article came to be: A few years back I was browsing through a firearms forum and came across a post that was so obnoxious, it just begged to be turned on its head and made into a parody. In it, the poster was talking about the best gun for women. "What Gun for  a Man?" is, I kid you not, very nearly a word-for-word repetition of this long ago post. But mine uses ridiculous and unfair stereotypes about men rather than ones about women, and of course concludes with a different gun recommendation.

Some people -- both men and women alike -- will never see the hurtfulness or stupidity of   prejudice unless you batter them about the head and shoulders with a clue bat made up of their own prejudices translated into terms that affect them personally. This I have done, and that's why I wrote that article.

It did and does pain me that a few readers may miss the point, and thus get hurt rather than made thoughtful by this extremely sarcastic article. Please accept my most sincere apologies if this was the case for you.
